The Law of Least Effort is one of the ‘Seven Spiritual Laws of Success’ by the wonderful Dr Deepak Chopra.
It says that nature’s intelligence functions with effortless ease . . . with carefreeness, harmony, and love. And that when we harness the forces of harmony, joy, and love, we create success and good fortune with effortless ease.
Well, if you are full of desire like I am, the words ‘effortless’ and ‘ease’ can be hard ones to get your head around, especially if you have been listening to the messages all around us that quite clearly say, that if we want things to happen we have to make it happen!
When you want to achieve and succeed, effort, action and struggle somehow seem appropriate and even necessary, but if you really FEEL into it, it actually does not FEEL good at all.
I know for sure that I have had times when I have come quite close to complete burn out through constantly driving my desires.
Now let me be clear, you absolutely can get things done, and achieve big things by relentlessly driving and efforting, BUT, I believe that there truly is another way.
Lately, I read THE MOST INCREDIBLE book called, ‘The Surrender Experiment’ by Michael A Singer, it was so incredible in fact, that I quite literally read it in one day. I was like a woman possessed and I don’t even think I stopped to eat or go to the toilet!
This book is all about a man that has dedicated 40 years of his life to completely surrendering to everything that life has naturally brought his way, without question. He has made it his practice and commitment to not resist anything, but to embrace and love it all. What has unfolded in his life has been nothing short of a miracle and I cannot recommend it enough as a MUST READ.
It calls us to acknowledge the perfection of this world without human interference, it calls for us to ask the question, ‘What would happen if we just let life be as it should be, without any interference’?
It talks about the fact that somewhere along the way we have decided that unless we know exactly what we want, and unless we tightly control our thoughts and actions, that life won’t go well for us.
But what if our attempts at control and efforting are actually hindering and even blocking our greatest and most successful life experiences? What if the Universe has an even greater plan for us, that will bring more joy and abundance than we could ever possibly conceive?
What if it was not meant to be an effort?
What if we stop rowing and let the stream take us?
After reading this life-changing book I began to look at my own life, and I realised with absolute clarity that EVERY SINGLE time I relax and have fun things go well for me, and that similarly, EVERY SINGLE time I try and make things move in the way I think they should, or try to control it all with precision and strategy, it feels dull and lifeless, and quite frankly, a bit of a ball ache.
When I give up the struggle and trust, life opens up amazing experiences and opportunities for me, EVERY SINGLE TIME! And it feels like I am flowing with life instead of desperately paddling upstream.
Does surrendering to life mean not having dreams, goals, and desires? Absolutely not, but I do believe that for us to experience our lives to our highest potential, it requires an element of trust and knowing that the Universe really does know better, and can see paths for us that we don’t even know are there with our very limited perspectives and perceptions.
You only have to look at how an acorn turns into an oak tree, or how a fetus turns into a baby to see what perfection occurs without any real effort or interference from us.
The moment of surrender is not when life is over, it’s when it begins– Marianne Willamson
So, the balance for me is to have an overarching intention for my life, which is to love. And to have desires and goals, and to move toward them in a joyful way, but also with a fundamental trust that there is a higher force guiding me and calling me to my greatest expression. Often it means that things do not unfold as I imagined they would, and often I am called in a direction that I may not have chosen or planned, but every time it takes me to a higher and greater place.
Life is full of choices and we all get to choose how we want to move through our lives.
I choose to be surprised and delighted by life, to witness the magic unfold as opposed to engineering and controlling it all.
I choose flow and least effort.
I choose to SURRENDER to the mighty intelligence that is all around us and inside of us.
My Soul is whispering, and I am listening.
